The horse chestnut is a large deciduous tree with striking, finger-like compound leaves, white spike-like inflorescences, and shiny brown seeds.
Seeds are the main ingredient used in herbal preparations. Certain standardized extracts from horse chestnut seeds are used to treat symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency.

The horse chestnut develops a broad, dense canopy. Its large leaves usually consist of five to seven individual leaflets that radiate from a common point.
In the spring, upright, candle-shaped inflorescences appear, bearing numerous white flowers. Yellow or reddish spots inside the flowers serve as a guide for pollinating insects.
The fertilized flowers develop into green, spiny capsules. Inside, there are usually one to three large, shiny brown seeds with a light-colored spot.
