Hops

Hops are a perennial climbing plant whose shoots grow anew from the ground each year. It is primarily the cone-like female inflorescences that are used.
Hops are known as an ingredient in beer. However, preparations made from hop cones are also traditionally used to relieve mild nervous tension and to promote sleep.

Hops have a perennial rootstock. The above-ground shoots die back in the winter and sprout again in the spring.
The rough, angular shoots wind clockwise around suitable supports. The leaves are opposite and usually have three to five lobes.
Hops are dioecious. This means that male and female flowers grow on different plants. For cultivation, female plants are primarily used.
The characteristic hop cones develop from the female inflorescences. Inside them are yellowish glands that contain a substance called lupulin.
